Tatters & Mummers

The project I'm working on will develop from my research into Tatter jackets, tree Dressing traditions, the 'Well-ness Dressings' workshop I devised, and other forms of unusual dress or materials.

Tatter jackets, Mummers and Morris Dancers seen at The Fleece Inn Apple Day

I devised and led the 'Well-ness Dressings' workshop for

carers from the Chinese Carers Support Group and others participating in the 'Carers' Well-Being Festival' at Birmingham Buddhist Centre, March 2016

I devised and led the arts-based activity derived from ancient and modern Tree Dressing practices, as seen at St. Kenelm's Church, Clent.

The notion of a type of clothing to define carers, outsiders and artists etc is central to my research and I've seen some intriguing possibilities:

A fine example of a child's outfit made in paper, made by Denise Watson of 'Delicarta' seen at Berrington Hall, National Trust property as part of the 'Capability Brown's Last Landscape' anniversary exhibition.

Traditional Herefordshire worker's smocks have wonderful, sturdy hand-stitched smocking, as well as beautiful shapes embroidered to add strength to the fabric on high wear areas. The designs are particular to Herefordshire.

This example was seen at Berrington Hall, a National Trust property, during the multi-faceted Capability Brown Anniversary events.

The authentic smocks are part of the extensive magpie-like collection of Charles Paget Wade (Snowshill Manor National Trust)
